Save the date for The 2nd Annual Stephen F. Austin Experience, happening Saturday, May 30th, 2026, at the Stephen F. Austin-Munson County Park, from 12pm-4pm.
The Stphen F. Austin Experience showcases the activities provided to local schools during the schoolyear, but this event is open to the public.
Bring the family and participate in historic themed activities. Try your hand at writing with a quill dip pen, learn what it takes to service and fire a musket, see how a cannon crew safely prepares and fires the cannon, learn to play games from the time period, and many more hands on and educational activities.

Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park represents a unique private-public partnership, and is a culmination of years of community support for Brazoria County’s most famous resident, Stephen F. Austin, “the Father of Texas,” as he was first called by fellow early Texan, Sam Houston. Following a ground-swell of support at the turn of the 21st Century to build a monument to appropriately honor Austin, local residents raised funds to construct the statue and facility grounds. Today, it is the first county-run historic site and is now open to the public five days per week (Wed-Sunday). The park features 10 acres, with its centerpiece an iconic, 76-foot tall statue of Stephen F. Austin, which was designed by famed Texas sculptor David Adickes. The Park and statue are located just off Hwy 288 west of Angleton. The complex includes a visitor and information center with gift shop, picnic areas, and a Texas-shaped pond in the back of the property where catch-and-release fishing is permitted.

Today, we stepped into a world that feels far away—but is actually the foundation of Texas as we know it today.

At a historical park dedicated to Stephen F. Austin, often called the “Father of Texas,” families can experience what life was really like nearly 200 years ago.

This is not a place where you just look at exhibits.
This is a place where you touch, try, and truly understand.

🧵 From Fiber to Fabric: Making Clothes by Hand

Before clothing became something you could buy, it was something you had to make—step by step.

Children explored the full process:

  • Spinning raw wool into thread using a drop spindle
  • Using a spinning wheel to increase efficiency
  • Weaving threads into fabric on a traditional loom
  • Learning about natural plant dyes used for coloring

What seems like a simple piece of clothing today was once the result of hours—or even days—of work.

⚔️ The Weight of History: Tools of Survival and Conflict

One of the most impactful parts of the experience was physical interaction with historical objects.

Children were able to:

  • Hold real cannonballs
  • Examine a sextant, used for navigation
  • Lift a real sword

Yiren made a very honest observation:

“This is so heavy. If I had to use this, I wouldn’t win.”

Another fascinating tool children explored was the sextant, an instrument used for navigation at sea.

Before GPS and modern technology, sailors relied on tools like the sextant to determine their position by measuring the angle between celestial objects—such as the sun or stars—and the horizon.

Without screens or devices, entertainment looked very different.

A simple setup—a pair of dice and a numbered board—was enough to create meaningful interaction.

✒️ Writing as a Craft

Before keyboards and pens, writing itself required skill and patience.

  • Dip pens
  • Glass pens
  • Ink flow and control

Writing was slower, more intentional, and more tactile.

In the time of Stephen F. Austin, life was not something provided—it was something built, step by step.

When children experience this world firsthand, they don’t just learn history.
They begin to understand effort, systems, and the value of the life they have today.
