Contribute to history and speak to the future through the America 250 Time Capsule

The public is invited to become a part of history and speak to the future by contributing to the George Memorial Library’s America 250 Time Capsule as the nation celebrates the United States’ semiquincentennial.
From 10:00 am – 4:00 pm on June 27 in the George Memorial Lobby, the community will have the opportunity to share a letter, drawing, or message to the future, as participants of all ages can reflect on what America means to them today, their hopes for the years ahead, and submit those thoughts to the library’s time capsule.
The capsule will be sealed and preserved as a snapshot of the Fort Bend community in 2026 and then opened in 2036.
Acceptable items for the time capsule include letters, notes, or drawings and small objects or keepsakes, all of which must fit within the size guidelines (no larger than 8.5” x 11”).
Items that will not be accepted include food, liquids, perishable items, batteries, electronics, sharp objects, hazardous materials, or bulky or oversized items. Explicit, offensive, or discriminatory content will also be denied.
The contributed materials must be appropriate for all ages, and staff reserves the right to decline any items that do not meet the guidelines. Please note that submissions may be reviewed before being placed in the capsule, and that all contributed items will become the library’s property and will not be returned.
Although the long-term condition of the items cannot be guaranteed, the items will be stored in a sealed container.
More Ways to Celebrate
George Memorial will host additional free, fun, and inviting America 250 activities on Saturday, June 27, for children, teens, and adults, all made possible by the Friends of the George Memorial Library.
America 250: Well Wishes
From 10:00 am – 4:00 pm in the Lobby, library patrons can decorate a star and add their voices to the library’s Wishes Station, sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. The creations will become part of a collective display honoring this historic milestone.
America 250: Paint and Sip
Adults and teenagers seeking a relaxing, yet sociable environment should consider the library’s America 250: Paint & Sip class from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm in the Meeting Room. Experience in the arts isn’t necessary to enjoy this class; all that is required is that participants bring their creativity as they are guided through a beautiful summer-inspired painting. Award-winning photographer and recipient of the 2024 Thypoch Photography Award, Oscar Velazco, will be the guide during this painting experience. While a celebrated photographer, Oscar is also a painter and drawing artist and has a substantial background as a graphic designer, musician, and music producer.
The course is designed to be accessible for beginners and equally engaging for more experienced participants. During this class, participants will learn the foundational techniques of blending, layering, and composition. They will also enjoy a refreshing seasonal beverage and take home both their artwork and a new recipe to try.
America 250: Cupcake Decorating
Adults and teenagers interested in a free, fun, hands-on, beginner-friendly culinary experience should consider the America 250: Cupcake Decorating Workshop, led by Carmen Lambert, the founder of Sweet Crumb Bakeshop. The workshop will be held from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm in Room 2A. Carmen, a decade-plus-long professional decorator with a degree in Culinary Arts, will cover buttercream and piping basics and host piping tips and cupcake pull-apart demonstrations during the workshop.
