This time, we put together a Houston ↔ San Antonio road trip guide featuring some of our favorite stops along the route — places that are great for stretching your legs, taking a break, letting the kids burn off energy, snapping photos, or simply discovering something unexpected.
Whether it’s your first time driving I-10 or a route you’ve traveled many times before, you may still find a few hidden gems you never noticed before.

1. Santa Claus Museum

About: The Santa Claus Museum features more than 5,000 Santa-themed collectibles from around the world, including figurines, music boxes, dolls, ornaments, artwork, and holiday decorations. It is proudly known as: “The Only Santa Museum in the South.”
This is not the kind of attraction that requires half a day — it feels more like a charming and unexpected little stop along the road. If you enjoy Christmas, quirky museums, or unique roadside finds, this place adds a fun and memorable touch to the trip.
Note: The museum has limited opening hours. It is typically open on Friday afternoons, with additional Saturday hours during December. It’s best to check ahead or make a reservation before visiting.

2. Beason’s Crossing Park

About: Located along the Colorado River, Beason’s Crossing Park sits in an area that played an important role in early Texas history.
According to historical records, in 1822, Benjamin Beason — one of Stephen F. Austin’s original “Old 300” colonists — operated a ferry crossing, mill, and inn here. Over time, the area gradually developed into a small settlement known as “Beason’s Crossing.”
Today, however, the atmosphere feels quiet and relaxing.
The river, open park space, historical marker, and classic small-town Texas surroundings create a peaceful stop along the drive — the kind of place that naturally slows the pace of a road trip for a little while.
After spending hours on I-10, it’s actually a really nice spot to step out of the car, get some fresh air, and enjoy the scenery by the river for a few minutes.
3. Columbus Oak

About: The Columbus Oak is the second-largest live oak tree in Texas.
This massive tree stands about 70 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of 329 inches and an average crown spread of more than 111 feet. It is estimated to be over 500 years old.
Unlike the trees you typically see in city parks, the Columbus Oak has a truly awe-inspiring “old Texas tree” presence — a giant trunk that would take several people to wrap around, an enormous canopy stretching outward in every direction, and the unmistakable feeling that this tree has witnessed centuries of Texas history.
Standing beneath it, you can really feel the scale and age of the tree in a way that photos almost can’t fully capture.

4. Colorado County Safety Rest Area
Location: Along IH-10, approximately 4.5 miles west of Columbus, between Houston and San Antonio (Both Eastbound and Westbound rest areas are available.)
About: Sometimes, the most important part of a family road trip isn’t adding another attraction — it’s simply finding a comfortable, safe, and clean place to take a short break.
After spending a long time in the car, especially with kids, even getting out for a few minutes to stretch and reset can make the rest of the drive feel much easier.
One of the biggest advantages of the Colorado County Safety Rest Area is how convenient and relaxing it feels. Parking is easy, the area is spacious, and it’s a good place to pause for a short break before getting back on the road.
The rest area also includes public restrooms, making it a very practical stop during the drive between Houston and San Antonio.
5. St. Mary Catholic Church

About: St. Mary Catholic Church is one of Texas’ most famous “Painted Churches.”
From the outside, the church may appear fairly simple and understated, but the interior is absolutely stunning — featuring beautifully painted ceilings, intricate hand-crafted details, and colorful stained glass windows inspired by classic European church architecture.
When sunlight shines through the stained glass, the entire sanctuary fills with color and creates a truly beautiful Old World atmosphere. It’s one of those places that feels unexpectedly grand and peaceful at the same time.
For many travelers, this ends up becoming one of the most memorable stops along the drive.

More than just a gas station, Buc-ee’s has become part of Texas road trip culture itself.
With its massive parking lot, endless rows of gas pumps, giant convenience store, Texas-themed souvenirs, and huge selection of snacks, beef jerky, hot food, and desserts, Buc-ee’s is an experience that surprises many first-time visitors.
And beyond the famous Beaver Nuggets, one of the reasons people love Buc-ee’s so much is the sense of reliability it brings to long drives — clean restrooms, spacious facilities, and easy road trip supplies all in one place.
For many travelers, stopping at Buc-ee’s simply feels like part of the Texas road trip experience.

7. Palmetto State Park

Beneath the trees grows the dwarf palmetto — a plant species that dates back to the age of dinosaurs — while Spanish moss hangs overhead, giving the entire park a Southern wetland atmosphere.
Instead of dry ranch land and open highways, the landscape here almost feels more like a Louisiana swamp forest hidden in the middle of Texas.
In addition to scenic walking trails, the San Marcos River, and an oxbow lake formed naturally by the river, the park also offers kayaking, tubing, fishing, swimming, birdwatching, camping, and biking.
It’s one of those places that instantly changes the mood of the road trip and makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a completely different side of Texas.

8. Luling Oil Museum

About: The Luling Oil Museum is located inside a historic 1885 mercantile building and preserves a fascinating piece of Texas oil history.
Inside, you’ll find early oil industry equipment, vintage photographs, drilling tools, historical footage, and stories about how the oil boom shaped both the town of Luling and Texas itself.
Unlike large modern science museums, this place feels much more personal — almost like a collection of memories that belong specifically to small-town Texas.
As you continue driving through this part of the state, you’ll also start noticing oil wells, pump jacks, and traces of Texas energy culture everywhere, along with the strong connection between small towns and the oil industry that helped shape them.
For anyone interested in understanding a deeper side of Texas history, this stop adds a lot of character to the road trip.

9. Guadalupe County Safety Rest Area

About: Like the Colorado County rest area earlier along the route, the Guadalupe County Safety Rest Area also has both Eastbound and Westbound locations, making it convenient no matter which direction you’re driving between Houston and San Antonio.
After spending hours on the road, sometimes simply getting out of the car for a short walk, stretching a little, and grabbing some water can make the rest of the drive feel much more comfortable.
This rest area is surprisingly well-equipped, featuring separate restrooms, an air-conditioned lobby and seating area, drinking fountains, vending machines, picnic tables, walking trails, and even a playground. There are also interpretive displays introducing local history and the surrounding natural environment.
Compared to a typical highway gas station stop, the overall atmosphere here feels much more spacious and relaxing.

10. Prince Solms Park

About: With its clear river water, people floating down the river on tubes, large shady trees, and laid-back vacation atmosphere, Prince Solms Park has a way of instantly shifting the road trip from “travel mode” into “relaxation mode.”
The park is also one of the best-known tube floating entry points in New Braunfels. Every summer, visitors grab inflatable tubes and slowly drift down the Comal River — a classic Texas summer experience.
The park itself covers about 19 acres and offers much more than just river views. Facilities include a 9-hole disc golf course, lighted basketball and tennis courts, open green spaces, public restrooms, drinking fountains, and scenic river trails.
Even if you’re not planning to get in the water, it’s still a wonderful place to slow down for a while and enjoy the atmosphere of New Braunfels.
11. Schlitterbahn Waterpark New Braunfels

About: Schlitterbahn is one of those classic Texas summer destinations that many families visit year after year.
One of its biggest highlights is the way it blends natural river scenery with a full-scale waterpark experience. Many attractions use the natural flow of the Comal River, giving the park a much more authentic Texas Hill Country vacation atmosphere compared to a typical man-made waterpark.
The property itself is enormous, featuring four separate sections — each one almost as large as a regional waterpark on its own. Inside, you’ll find river rides, waterslides, pools, tube floating areas, children’s play zones, swim-up bars, and everything from relaxing attractions to high-thrill water rides.
The resort also offers six different accommodation styles, ranging from standard hotel rooms to larger vacation homes, making it easy to turn the stop into a full weekend getaway.

12. Natural Bridge Caverns

About: Natural Bridge Caverns feels like stepping into an entirely different world beneath Texas.
Massive stalactites, enormous underground chambers, dramatic rock formations, and carefully designed lighting create a striking “underground world” atmosphere throughout the caverns.
The two most popular cave tours here are the Discovery Tour and the Hidden Passages Tour. Among them, the Discovery Tour features many of the caverns’ most iconic underground spaces and is usually the top choice for first-time visitors.
Today, the property has expanded far beyond a traditional cave attraction. The park also includes ropes courses, gem mining, mazes, outdoor adventure areas, restaurants, and gift shops — making it feel more like a full underground adventure park.
It’s also one of the most visually dramatic stops along the Houston ↔ San Antonio road trip route.
