From Bast to Bag: Plant Fiber Workshop- HCCC

For tens of thousands of years, humans have been twisting plants into string, the foundational element of bags, nets, and textiles. Join Molly Koehn (mah-lee kayn) for this two-day, beginner-friendly workshop, and learn how to harvest and process your own plant fibers to create a flexible bag suitable for carrying water bottles, oranges, seashells, cans of soda, or whatever you find on your outdoor adventures!
Our Craft Garden boasts over 20 species of plants that can be made into strings of various sizes, ranging from thick rope to thin sewing thread. On day one, participants will learn hands-on techniques to harvest and process various plants for bast fibers: long, strong fibers obtained from the inner bark of certain plants. On day two, participants will use a variety of prehistoric, tool-free techniques to turn their processed fibers into two-ply string and loop it into a flexible bag.
This workshop is held over two days and participants must be able to attend both days. Long sleeves, long pants, and gardening-style gloves are required on the first day. A wide-brimmed hat is also recommended.
