Step into a resonant landscape of voices and light with Undercurrents, a new interactive art installation by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. This immersive experience transforms the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern into an echoing chamber of sound, illumination, and memory, revealing how communication travels across time, space, and human relationships.
Undercurrents invites visitors to speak, listen, and reflect as voices are carried through a glowing network of light, creating a living, ever-changing environment shaped by those who enter.
LED lights ripple through the space in response to recorded voices, including original works by Houston poets. Visitors can step up to intercoms along the walkway and add their own messages. Each recording becomes a moving pulse of light, traveling through the artwork as an AI system links it to earlier voices in the archive. Every contribution sparks an “echo,” blending past and present into an evolving soundscape. The Cistern’s natural acoustics amplify and reshape these exchanges, making the space itself an active participant. As more voices are added, the installation continues to shift, so no two visits are quite the same.
